Michael is an enthusiastic designer, educator and technology innovator, who is keen on operating along the intersections between culture, technology and entrepreneurship. He is the CEO and Executive Director of educational technologies start-up Wefaa Robotics Pte Ltd. As an Adjunct Research Fellow, he investigates the interfaces between robotic technologies and architectural spaces, developing and designing solutions for better integration of autonomous robots in building environments.
Before that, he was an Assistant Professor in Architecture and Sustainable Design (ASD) at SUTD and director of the REAL Lab for Research in Renewable and Reconfigurable Architecture, which pushed the frontiers of design and construction, driven by digital technologies and the desire to provide innovative solutions for decarbonisation in the built environment. REALLab provides cutting-edge research in renewable materials, digitalisation, robotic fabrication, and circular construction to support decarbonisation in the built environment.
He taught Design to first-year students (Design Thinking and Innovation), Design Studios for undergraduate and graduate students, and building technology in the undergraduate curriculum (Architecture Science and Technology), and he coordinated the PhD programme at ASD between 2019 and 2021.
He was appointed Young Urban Leader at the World Cities Summit and has served as a member of various committees such as the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) in Singapore and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF).
He was an affiliate faculty at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a senior researcher at the Singapore–ETH Centre's Future Cities Laboratory (FCL), where he led a Singapore-based research team on robotic fabrication in architecture for Gramazio & Kohler's lab of Architecture and Digital Fabrication (ETHZurich). The research included PhD research, industry collaborations and design studios for master students.
Before the activities in Singapore, he was involved in teaching and design research with Zaha Hadid and Patrik Schumacher at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and the University of Innsbruck. In 2004, Michael obtained his license with the Austrian Board of Architects (EU-wide recognition) and was the principal at Moll Budig Architecture, a multi-disciplinary office on architecture, urbanism and design strategies. Built projects include industrial buildings such as a metal recycling company, soap production facilities in Innsbruck and residential projects.
